Anaesthetics

Anaesthetics, or anaesthesia, is dedicated to the removal of pain and sensation during surgical or invasive procedures.

Your anaesthetist will listen to and discuss any concerns, and they will stay with you and monitor you throughout your procedure.

Our consultant anaesthetists are highly experienced members of the Royal College of Anaesthetists and used to working as part of our multidisciplinary team to provide high-quality and patient-centred care.

Types of anaesthetic

There are different types of anaesthetic, and our consultant anaesthetists will discuss which is most appropriate based on your health, procedure and preferences.

General anaesthetic is usually given for major operations. It induces a state of controlled unconsciousness — a bit like being asleep — so you shouldn't feel pain. If you have a general anaesthetic, our anaesthetists will assess you beforehand and monitor you throughout.

Local or regional anaesthesia is usually given for minor procedures. This involves injecting anaesthetic to numb the area of the body being operated on. Nerve blocks and epidurals are examples of regional anaesthetics.
