Mr Hide Yamamoto is Consultant Urological Surgeon and the Lead for Urological Cancer at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust. He specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer and bothersome urinary symptoms caused by enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH).
He offers a personalised approach to every patient, tailored to their unique needs. His ethos is to offer early and accurate assessment for every patient and achieve the best possible outcome. This may involve timely treatment but in many cases reassurance is all that is required. He also considers patients' experience of their care to be as important as their outcome.
For men with possible prostate cancer, Mr Yamamoto focuses on achieving a fast and accurate diagnosis, through the use of multi-parametric MRI and MRI-guided transperineal biopsies.
For men needing cancer treatment he offers nerve-sparing robotic prostate cancer surgery (DaVinci) with functional outcomes aligning with best published results.
He also specialises in the management of BPH, including laser BPH surgery (HoLEP), TURP and prostate artery embolisation, with exceptionally low complication rates.
Mr Yamamoto gained his primary medical qualification at Cambridge University and went on to obtain a PhD in prostate cancer from University College London supported by a British Urological Foundation Scholarship.
He is a pioneer of transperineal prostate biopsies performed under local anaesthetic and was one of the first in the UK to adopt the new approach. He has personally performed more than 1,000 transperineal prostate biopsies and trains other urologists at national courses.
Mr Yamamoto is active in prostate cancer research as a principal investigator for the TRANSLATE study which investigates the best method for diagnosing prostate cancer. He is also recognised by my peers as a member of the Editorial Board for BJU International.
Mr Yamamoto also held a joint position during clinical training as an academic clinical lecturer at King's College London, and led novel translational research projects in prostate and bladder cancer.
He is currently the lead for the urgent referral pathways for prostate and bladder cancer at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust and also the lead for education in the Urology department.
