Mr Richard Benson graduated as a doctor from St George's Hospital Medical School, London in 2000 and then carried out his basic surgical training on the Reading and Oxford surgical rotation. This was where he developed an interest in shoulder and elbow surgery.

He enjoys his role specialising in upper limb surgery, and his special interests include shoulder and elbow surgery, rotator cuff problems, tendon problems, sports injuries, frozen shoulder, arthritis of the shoulder and elbow and upper limb trauma.

Mr Benson thoroughly enjoys his job, and is a caring and empathic individual who takes great pride in his work. He treats each patient as an individual and ensures he meets the expectations and individual needs of each patient.

He is committed to providing an excellent service to his patients and achieves very high success rates and very few complications. He takes great care in recording surgical details and outcomes in order to audit his work, helping ensure he can maintain the high quality he strives to achieve.

Mr Benson was awarded the Girdlestone Scholarship from Oxford University and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, where he worked as a clinical research fellow. Following this, he gained a doctorate for his work on rotator cuff tendon failure, for which he was also awarded the prestigious Didier Patte Prize by the European Society of Shoulder & Elbow Surgery in 2009.

He has spent many years lecturing and tutoring for Oxford University with his Orthopaedic Higher Surgical Training on the Oxford programme. In 2013 he was offered a fellowship with the Brisbane Upper Limb Unit, the major trauma centre for Queensland, Australia.

He worked there for 12 months, gaining further experience in all aspects of upper limb surgery, including performing replantation. During this time he also became an Associate Lecturer for Queensland University. 

In 2014 he was appointed as a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust.
