If you’ve found a lump, noticed a change in your breast, or something simply doesn’t feel quite right – you’re not alone. These concerns are incredibly common and at Wells Health, we see patients every day with similar questions:

“Is this normal?”

“Do I need to get it checked?”

“What if I don’t want to wait for a referral?”

The most important thing to know is most breast changes are not caused by cancer.

Many turn out to be harmless, such as fibroadenomas in younger women, breast cysts in those aged 40–50, or gynaecomastia (benign breast swelling) in men. But even when symptoms seem minor, they should never be ignored.

Our advice is simple: if you’ve noticed a new breast symptom, come and see us for a fast, specialist-led check.

Five breast symptoms that should always be checked

1. A new lump or area of thickening

This is the most common reason people come to see us. While most lumps are benign, it’s important to find out what’s causing the change.

  • In younger women, we often diagnose fibroadenomas – firm, smooth, mobile lumps.
  • In women aged 40 to 50, breast cysts (fluid-filled sacs) are common.
  • In men, we frequently see gynaecomastia, a completely benign condition.

Even when lumps are harmless, prompt assessment provides peace of mind and clarity.

2. A change in breast size, shape or contour

Any noticeable change in how your breast looks or feels deserves a closer look. This includes:

  • One breast becoming noticeably larger or lower
  • Skin dimpling, pulling in, or an area that appears uneven.

These changes aren’t always painful, which is why it’s so important to have them properly reviewed.

3. Nipple or skin changes

The skin around the breast and nipple can be affected by several conditions, but persistent changes should be checked:

  • A nipple that suddenly turns inward (inversion)
  • Crusting, scaling, or flaking of the nipple skin
  • Redness or thickening of the breast skin (sometimes described as an “orange peel” texture)

Although some skin conditions are benign, others may require further investigation.

4. Nipple discharge

Fluid leaking from the nipple – particularly when spontaneous or only on one side – should always be assessed, especially if:

  • The discharge is bloody or clear
  • It happens without squeezing
  • It’s persistent.

Most causes are non-cancerous, but symptoms like these need expert attention to rule out anything more serious.

5. Pain or discomfort

Breast pain is very common, and usually linked to hormones, benign cysts, or infections. However, it’s worth investigating if:

  • It’s localised to one area
  • It persists through your cycle
  • It comes with other symptoms (such as a lump or change in shape).

Pain alone is rarely a sign of cancer, but it should never be dismissed if it’s new or ongoing.

Understanding your family history

At Wells Health, we also offer comprehensive breast cancer risk assessment for patients who may have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer.

Mr Mohsin Dani and Mr Haresh Devalia are certified to carry out full family history evaluations and where appropriate, can offer:

  • Regular breast surveillance
  • Genetic testing, in line with NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) guidelines.

While most patients do not require genetic testing, many can benefit from increased screening or monitoring, depending on their personal and family history

If you’re unsure about your risk, our team can provide clear guidance and a personalised plan – all from our one-stop breast clinic.
